Zach Burstein - Team in Training - Leukemia & Lymphoma Society - St. Anthony's Triathlon

On April 27, 2003, I will be participating on behalf of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society in the St. Anthony's Triathlon to raise money for blood-related cancer research that will improve the quality of life for patients and their families. This past November when I signed up for the cause, I met some of the honored teammates, people currently battling leukemia or lymphoma, whom myself and other participants will be swimming, biking, and running for. I wasn't sure in the beginning if this event was something I could complete. The tremendous amount of fundraising (minimum $3,900) and training (event includes one mile ocean swim, 25 mile bike ride, 6.2 mile run) seemed quite difficult. But the words of 13 year-old survivor Marissa Hull gave me the inspiration to train for this triathlon: "I am here as proof [that your] money helps find ways to cure cancer…every last cent of your money helps one more child survive."

Every year 110,000 people are diagnosed with and 60,000 people die of blood-related cancers in the United States. Leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease, myeloma. Have you known anyone who has struggled with one of these diseases? Fortunately no one I have known has been stricken with a blood-related cancer and I can only hope it stays that way. Realistically I know, however, that at some point in my life, someone very close to me will be diagnosed with leukemia or lymphoma. What is the chance that in the future you will know someone with a blood-related cancer?

Since 1990 the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society, through Team in Training events like my triathlon, has raised over $100 million. This money has led to advances in the development of new drugs and treatment approaches for leukemia, lymphoma and myeloma, and has provided many services including blood cancer education and patient support from diagnosis through treatment and recovery. Please remember that generous people like you are the lifeline to continuing research and patient care. That is why your help is needed. Think…if 100 people give at least $75, we will together raise over $7,500!

I'm asking you to reach deep into your heart to support those with blood-related cancers-people who need our help. You may already know someone affected by a blood-related cancer. If you feel comfortable, please share their story with me. I will honor them by wearing his/her name on my clothing or carrying his/her picture while I complete the triathlon.

Please remember that through your donation you will not only help those currently battling these diseases, but you will ensure that research is conducted to improve treatment for people in the years to come who will be diagnosed with leukemia and lymphoma. At some point in the future this research could drastically improve the life of someone close to you or even yourself.

I appreciate your generosity. It means a lot to me and to those whom you will be helping. If you would like to make a contribution, please follow the link to donate or send an email to zburstein@yahoo.com.

All my best,

Zach
